Quality At Home Informational Grandparent DNA Testing
Our quality premium home grandparent DNA test offers an alternative to paternity or maternity testing when the alleged father or mother may not be available. The grandparentage test will determine a statistical probability of whether or not the tested grandmother and or grandfather share a biological relationship with the tested child or children. The grandparent test is often used in such cases to establish paternity by testing the alleged father’s parent(s) against a possible grandchild.
Our informational grandparent test can provide you with the peace of mind of whether or not a biological relationship exists between the tested participants. If you need the results for your grandparent DNA test to be admissible evidence in a court of law or other governmental domestic agency, then you must purchase our AABB accredited legal grandparent DNA test. Our legal grandparent DNA tests may be used as admissible court approved evidence in child support, visitation rights, change name on the birth certificate, estate, wills, probate situations, and/or any other type case where the identity of the tested parties must be proven by an AABB accredited DNA test. If your DNA test is for immigration purposes, the USCIS/ICE & Dept. Of Homeland security may require AABB accredited DNA evidence of the biological relationship. If so, then order our AABB accredited DNA test for immigration purposes.
The grandparent DNA test may be done with only one of the grandparents and the alleged grandchild, however, it is always recommended to add the mother or known parent of the child if at all possible, to increase the conclusiveness of the test. Each person inherits half of their DNA from their mother and half from their father. When the known parent participates in the grandparent DNA test, they are compared to their child and the DNA which was inherited from that parent can be eliminated from the testing equation. This isolates the DNA from the parent in question, which is then compared to his or her parent, the grandparent, giving a more conclusive result.
If more than one grandparent is able to take part in the test, combining the two known parents of the alleged father provides the father’s complete genetic profile. This type of test is known as a Missing Parent DNA Test and is a good option to consider when the child’s mother is not participating in the test. Although a missing parent test is conclusive, adding the child’s mother to the missing parent test will reveal the complete genetic footprint, thus allowing for a result as conclusive as a paternity test.
In a scenario where the alleged grandchild is a male and the paternal grandfather is able to take part in the DNA test, a Y-STR test can be done to conclusively determine whether or not they share the same male lineage.

DNA samples are usually collected through a cheek swab process. If a test participant is unable to submit a swab, such as may be the case where a participant may be deceased, incarcerated or otherwise unavailable, DNA may also be collected through other means. Common forensic samples are hair (must have the root ball attached), mucous on a tissue, earwax and toothbrushes. Additionally, in certain cases tissue or blood samples may be available from a medical examiner or coroner’s office. Forensic sampling prices apply. For pricing and more details on the process, please contact a DNA Case Manager.
The grandparent testing process is very simple. DNA sampling is normally done through a cheek swab, also known as a buccal swab. The swab is painlessly rubbed against the inside of the cheek, which collects skin cells from the inside of the mouth. Because our lab is AABB accredited, all test samples are processed according to AABB guidelines, whether you purchase an informational or at home test for peace of mind, or a legal test. This is why it is very important that you only trust an AABB accredited lab to process your DNA samples. As an accredited lab, all of our tests are conducted twice. For that reason, in your test kit you will receive 2 swabs per person. One swab should be done on each side of the mouth. As a general rule, be sure the mouth is clean by rinsing with water before swabbing. The test participant should refrain from smoking, and drinking coffee or tea for 3-4 hours before the DNA collection. Once the swabs are done, prop them up to let them dry and then put them in their respective envelopes that were included in the test kit. Place the DNA samples in the return prepaid pre-addressed mailer and simply drop the samples off at the courier’s location or box to send your kit back to the lab for testing. When all samples arrive in lab, the test results will be e-mailed in 3-5 business days, and if you purchased hard copy results, it will be sent to the bill to address unless otherwise noted.
